Counterfeit Currency Alert - £5, £10 and £20 notes

We are urging residents and businesses to be vigilant following reports counterfeit notes are in circulation across West Mercia.

Officers have received several reports counterfeit bank notes are being used and are now issuing advice on how to spot them.

We have been made aware of incidents whereby counterfeit notes, which are entirely worthless, were used to purchase high-value electronic goods on an online selling forum and being used to purchase goods from retailers on Bromsgrove High Street.

We recommend residents and businesses use online banking to receive payments for goods, especially when using social media selling sites, and to follow the advice below if cash transactions are necessary.

Please check notes carefully, paying particular attention to:

The hologram image – This should change between “Twenty” and “Pounds” when tilted.

The transparent window – This will have clearly defined images and edges.

Raised print – Especially check the words ‘Bank of England’.

If a note feels unusual, appears blurry, or lacks security features, do not accept it.

What to do if you suspect a counterfeit note is being handed to you:

Do not put yourself at risk or confront anyone directly.

Try to retain the note if safely possible.

Record any useful information, such as a description of the person or vehicle.

Report it to police via 101 or online at: www.westmercia.police.uk

Businesses should also notify their bank.

We ask residents, shop owners, and businesses to share this information to help prevent further circulation.
